House passes hair style discrimination bill proposed after N.J. wrestler forced to cut locs

Laws to make it a federal crime to discriminate on the basis of hair styles or texture handed the U.S. Residence Friday.

It passed, 235-189, with all but 14 Republicans voting no. All 10 New Jersey Home Democrats supported the legislation while Reps. Jeff Van Drew, R-2nd Dist., and Chris Smith, R-4th Dist., voted from it.

The monthly bill blocks discrimination from hair models associated with race or countrywide origin, such as tightly coiled or tightly-curled, locs, cornrows, twists, braids, Bantu knots and Afros. It is recognized as the Producing a Respectful and Open Planet for Normal Hair, or CROWN, Act.
