Unique design, splashy interiors make this Manjeri house amazing | Lifestyle Decor

Dr. Abdul and his wife Dr. Shirin are thrilled to share the experiences of building their brand-new house ‘Ishal’ at the beautiful countryside of Mullambara near Manjeri. Shirin’s brother and his wife are architects; so, the couple didn’t have to look anywhere else to hire designers.

The family wasn’t interested in building a flat box-style house, that has become so common in Kerala. Instead, they wanted a beautiful house, with slope roof, that suited the tropical weather of the area. Besides, they wanted the interiors to receive oodles of natural light and air. Moreover, they prefer having enough privacy for each area. Meanwhile, the family is relieved that the architects, who are their close relatives, designed the house and oversaw the construction too.

The elaborate roof, in four layers, is the highlight of the elevation. It truly grants a majestic look to the house. Roofing tiles have been paved on the GI truss roof. Besides, there is a layer of mud tile ceiling beneath it. The exposed laterite stone walls add a rustic charm to the exteriors. Meanwhile, the interior walls have been plastered and painted.

Designed in 220 sqft, this amazing abode has a car porch, sit out, living areas, kitchen with an adjacent work area and two bedrooms in the ground floor. Meanwhile, there is a bedroom, a living area and an open terrace in the upper floor.

Grey coloured tiles in rustic finish are mostly paved in the common areas. The custom-made furniture pieces perfectly suit the general theme of the house. The simple couch set, chairs and the dining table with bench on one side add a classy vibe to the interiors. Designer tiles have been used on the wall and the floor in the wash area to highlight this area.

The structure has been designed in ‘L’ shape, to fit into the unique lay out of the plot. Besides, this ensures visibility to all the spots in the house. For instance, it is easy to grab a view of the entrance area from the kitchen. The spaces are divided into private, public and semi-private zones. The sit out, car porch and the main entrance are in the central part of the structure. Meanwhile, the other areas are arranged on both flanks.

From the quaint sit out and the entrance area, one could enter a vast hall designed in the open theme. The living and the dining areas are lavishly sprawled here without any separating features. A sliding glass door in the living area opens to the yard close to the boundary wall where a splendid vertical garden has been arranged.

The staircase has been built by paving wooden planks on metal frame. The couple proudly say that they own an impressive number of books. They wanted ample storage space to keep them and also the study materials of their children. Interestingly, lots of storage area line the walls of the corridor, beside the staircase that leads to the bedroom in the upper floor.

The mezzanine floor is a smart addition, taking advantage of the incredible ceiling height. This area could be transformed into a mini guest bedroom too. The interiors are decorated with indoor plants, bringing a hint of greenery into the house. Bay windows are installed in the bedrooms in the lower floor. The fabulous beauty of the garden and the landscape could be enjoyed from here.

The kitchen cabinets are done in marine plywood with mica finish. The counter top, meanwhile, has been paved with granite. An adjacent work area too has been arranged as part of the kitchen area.

The trend to pave the front yard with inter locking bricks or tiles have become common in Kerala. However, Abdul and Shirin weren’t ready to blindly copy this trend. They used baby mettle in their front yard allowing the rain water to seep into the ground. Natural stones and grass have been paved in alternate layers in some part of the landscape. Interestingly, the windows are installed on the right spots to receive the cool breeze. So, the interiors have a comfortable ambience. There is no need to switch on the light during the day as the sunrays enter the house in abundance.

The construction got stalled for a while during the lockdown period. However, the family is happy that they have moved into the comfort and safety of their dream abode. The couple do not hesitate to shower prises on the architects for designing a spectacular dwelling, just as they had dreamed.
