Do you know Interior

Historic Houston home designed by Texas’ first Black architect hits market at $875,000

Phylicia Rashad, Debbie Allen and Muhammad Ali, along with every governor in Texas, are just a few of the people who have graced the halls of 3512 Oakdale Street — and you could be next.

The four-bedroom masterpiece designed in 1959 by John S. Chase was originally one story but was expanded to include a second floor to meet the needs of Chase’s growing family. As Texas’ first licensed Black architect, Chase was a pioneer in home design in the state during the 20th century, and his Oakdale Street home is a unique piece of history now on the market.

Situated on a 16,590 sq. ft. cul-de-sac lot, the home’s “grand entertaining space” includes two designated living areas, a dining space and cantilevered staircase that spans the length of the in-ground fountain beneath it, per Houston Association of Realtors. Natural light also pours in through oversized windows.

The home has been a token of peace, love and joy within the Chase family for more than 60 years and there’s no doubt that if they could, they would hold on to it forever. But according to Chase’s daughter Saundria Gray, that doesn’t make sense to do, unfortunate as it may be.

“If you own the home you have the right to do whatever you want,” Gray says, “but I would hope that any future owner would respect the preserve the architecture of the home in the style and manner which reflects my dad’s work. That would be really important to me.”

Designed in 1959, the home's current floor plan is functional yet still maintains its original sophistication, per HAR.

Gray added that she’d like to see “the tradition, the architecture that it represents” be maintained throughout time.

OFF THE MARKET: A shortage of single-family homes has sparked a buying frenzy in Houston

Asked if there was anything about the home one wouldn’t just by viewing the listing, Gray noted an outdoor, brick charcoal grill that “looks like a small house,” specially designed and built by Mr. Chase himself. Who doesn’t love a good barbecue?

While the passing of their mother prompted the children to put the home on the market, the memories made there will forever remain. And they can only hope the new owners share their same sentiments.
